At least 14 people were killed when a passenger van in Kurram agency struck a landmine in Gudar Area early on Tuesday.
The blast took the passenger van apart taking 14 lives including two women and four children. Irfan Ali, a local administration official said,
An anti-tank mine was buried on the roadside and hit a pick-up van.. it was a rutted path in an area that is at a distance.
Thirteen other people were injured in the blast and were shifted to a hospital nearby. According to ISPR, an MI017 helicopter was sent to the area to bring the injured to Peshawar for treatment. No one came forward to claim the blast.
The office of the Prime Minister said that the premier had, ”directed relevant authorities to extend maximum support for the treatment of the injured” in light of the attack at Kurram agency. Reports suggest that the attack was targeting census workers in the area. Census workers have been the target of many attacks since the national enumeration exercised kicked off on March 15.
The Kurram agency is known for sectarian clashes between Sunnis and Shias. The area has been a stronghold for Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its factions. Just last week some 28 people were killed and over a 100 wounded when a suicide bomber detonated a car rigged with explosives outside an Imambargah in the Kurram tribal region. Jamaat ul Ahrar (JuA) claimed responsibility for that attack. JuA is a splinter group of the TTP.
For over a decade, Pakistan has been at war with terrorist organizations who have killed tens of thousands of people. Even Islamabad took several large-scale offensives. Past Tuesday, four convicted members of TTP were executed in prison. While Pakistan has seen large success, some areas still witness terrorism.
Pakistan initiated an operation against the militant faction within the country by the name of Operation Zarb e Azb. Most recently a follow-up operation has started targeting every violent element by the name Operation Radd ul Fasaad. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates.
