President of Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage (SCTH), Prince Sultan bin Salman, launched the Post-Umrah Program on Sunday. The Post-Umrah Program is an initiative taken by the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to allow conversion of Umrah visas into tourist visas. This step was taken in order to allow pilgrims from all around the world to witness the historic landmarks of the Kingdom with their own eyes, as stated by Prince Sultan in a press statement released by SPA, the official news agency of SPA.
In the press statement, he also that those on Umrah visas could also opt to make cultural, medical, and educational tours, and even visit exhibitions and attend conferences after having performed their religious duties. Many Muslims around the world have welcomed the idea of being provided with the ability to convert their Umrah visas into tourism visas. As evident by the name, Post-Umrah Program, it is evident that the conversion only applies to Umrah visas and those of Hajj are not applicable currently.
Prince Sultan stated that the SCTH is carrying out his program in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Hajj. Evidently, this program was initiated a long time ago however, the dynamics involved were the reason it took so long for realization. The Prince stated that the procedures involved in converting Umrah visas to tourist visas were simply not ready. Furthermore, he said that business visa holders and GCC citizens would also be able to avail the Post-Umrah Program.
Umrah visas allow only a strict and monitored passage into Saudi Arabia and is restricted for religious activities alone.
