Upon completion, Barakah Nuclear Plant to provide approximately 25% of UAE’s electricity needs.
The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) recently completed important safety tests at Unit 1 of the Barakah Nuclear Plant, UAE’s first nuclear plant located in Barakah, Abu Dhabi. All tests of the plant confirm robustness of the structure and operational safety. According to ENEC, successful completion of these tests,
represents another major achievement in the testing and commissioning phase of the plant.
Barakah Nuclear Plant Unit 1 underwent Structural Integrity Test (SIT) and Integrated Leak Rate Test (ILRT) over a period of several weeks. Both tests were successful confirming the structure’s ability to perform safely under normal and extraordinary circumstances.
The SIT evaluates the strength of the Reactor Containment Building (RCB), while the ILRT assesses the leak tightness of the containment building under various conditions. Barakah Nuclear Plant is set to undergo several other tests as it is prepared for commissioning and commercial operation. The next major test Barakah Nuclear Plant will undergo is the Hot Functional Testing (HFT) under which several systems are tested simultaneously at temperatures and pressures that simulate normal operations. ENEC CEO, Mohamed al Hammadi said,
We have maintained our track record of safety and quality with the completion of the SIT and ILRT. The commissioning phase of a nuclear energy plant is a critical step towards the first fuel load. Before loading the fuel, it is essential that the plant is tested under the highest standards of safety, security and quality… With the completion of these tests on Unit 1, we are moving closer to achieving our goal of supplying up to a quarter of our nation’s electricity needs with low-carbon, sustainable nuclear energy. Our work at Barakah continues to support the UAE’s energy mix strategy as well as the future social and economic growth of the UAE.
Barakah nuclear plant is reportedly progressing steadily. Unit 1 stands at 88% completion, Unit 2 at 72%, Unit 3 at 50% and Unit 4 stands at 31% completion. All four units of the Barakah nuclear plant will deliver safe, clean, and efficient nuclear energy to the UAE grid. Barakah nuclear plant, after completion, will provide approximately 25% of UAE’s electricity needs saving up to 12 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates.
