It is no secret that Albert Einstein helped shape the world we live in some 100 years ago. While he helped the world of Physics a great deal, his theory of general relativity is a concept he is quite famous for. Relativity is the core of modern-day Physics. Relativity is the reason why things like GPS satellites and mobile internet exist in the first place. Theory of general relativity is the reason he is perhaps the most famous scientist in history. Of course, there are things Albert Einstein got wrong.
We know him as a great scientist, of course that doesn’t mean he didn’t make mistakes. He made plenty of errors and that’s exactly what we will talk about in our list of things Albert Einstein got wrong. Read on and enjoy.
The first on our list of things Albert Einstein got wrong is the theory of relativity, which talks about gravity, time, and space in mathematical equations. In order for him to get the math right, he needed to create a new constant to balance his equations. He called it the cosmological constant. Later, scientist discovered that there is no such thing as a ‘constant’ in the universe. The universe is expanding all around us. Einstein later abandoned the cosmological constant however, scientists now use it to represent ‘dark energy’ that causes the universe to expand.
According to Einstein’s equations, gravity could bend light. Gravity could warp light waves as they pass through an object, and the bigger the object, the more the light will bend around it. This concept is referred to as gravitational lensing. A concept that can be used to measure mass of huge objects, and magnify distant objects. It can also be used to map dark matter which is invisible and makes up an estimated 85% of the universe’s mass. Einstein thought that gravitational lensing would be too small to see and he dismissed the entire concept as useless.
The theory of relativity correctly predicted the presence of ripples in spacetime which is referred to as gravitational waves. His idea was that moving matter around in space should create a wave since it was already demonstrated that matter could curve space. Think of the effect that is produced when you drop a stone into water. But this idea seemed pretty insane to Einstein and when the time came to write a mathematical formula describe gravitational waves, he couldn’t do it. Therefore, even though his own theory predicted the existence of said waves, he rejected the idea completely. Later however, he was able to fix it.
Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity predicted the presence of black holes, but once again, he was unable to make sense of them. With gravitational waves he later came to know his mistakes with help of another scientist friend, in this case however, he completely dropped the existence of black holes. Of course, we now have plenty of evidence that they in fact exit.
Last on our list of things Albert Einstein got wrong has something to do with quantum mechanics which is a branch of Physics that deals with subatomic particles. Basically, quantum mechanics suggests that two particles can exist in two states at the same time and can transmit information to one another faster than the speed of light. Today, scientists have established that the theory is essentially real. However, they accept that they don’t completely understand it. Albert Einstein had major doubts about theories of quantum mechanics and therefore, dropped them completely which is perhaps his biggest failure yet.
These were few of the major things Albert Einstein got wrong. There are many, and we still regard him as the greatest scientist.
