Don’t think for a second that the modern civilization is responsible for giving your saunas and introducing the concept of a spa day. Sweat baths and saunas formed a huge part of Mayans’ culture. They believed that the sweat produced would relieve them of impurities.
Remember that rumor flying around regarding a Mayan calendar and the end of the world. That was totally false. Mayans were known to have several, and not just one, calendars. None of those calendars predicted that the world would end in 2012. One of their calendars that had a cycle of 2,880,000 days ended and everybody thought the world was ending. Sigh!
Mayans had perhaps the most elaborate and sophisticated writing systems in those ages. They would write an absolutely anything they could find. They were probably meant to becoming great writers and storytellers, unfortunately, many of their writings were lost when the Spanish final conquered them.
