Many of us watch science fiction movies and think that is never going to happen. What we fail to realize is that we have been proven wrong over and over again. That’s exactly the case with sci-fi books. The fact is, that science fiction books and movies have predicted the future more than we are aware of. Or in other words, they merely inspired future discoveries. Today, we are listing a few books that predicted the future. For example, there are some that predicted mass surveillance, earbuds, waterbed, and even a bionic limb.
Take a look at the following books that predicted the future and let us know if you were fascinated at all.
Looking Backward – Edward Bellamy
The first on our list of books that predicted the future is Looking Backward. This particular book, written by Edward Bellamy, predicted credit cards. It was published some 63 years before credit cards were invented. A character in the book goes to sleep for 113 years, wakes up in year 2000 and finds that people now used “credit” cards for a major chunk of their purchases.
The World Set Free – H. G. Wells
The World Set Free was published in year 1914. What’s fascinating about this book is that it not only predicted Atomic Bombs but may have given Dr. Leo Szilard the idea for an atomic bomb in the first place. Dr. Szilard was the man who split the atom. In the book however, the atomic bomb was a uranium hand grenade, with a lot more radiation.
2001: A Space Odyssey – Arthur C. Ckarke
This particular book was released in year 1968 and it predicted the iPad. The book is about an alien race that creates intelligent life on Earth. The book talks about artificial intelligence, evolution and the nuclear war, but the most fascinating and quite accurate prediction was one that involved electronic (news)papers, or in the words a newspad.
Stand on Zanzibar – John Brunner
This novel was first published in year 1968. It tells a story that takes place in year 2010 however. In this book, U.S. is dealing with social divides and overpopulation. In telling the story, the book predicts some wild inventions we are familiar with today including on-demand TV, laser printers, electric cars, satellite TV and legalization of marijuana.
Gulliver’s Travels – Jonathan Swift
The last on our list of books that predicted the future is one that predicted that Mars had two moons. The follows the tales of a man who travels into different worlds. His name is Gulliver. One of the worlds is inhabited by tiny humans, while another is inhabited by giants. Gulliver stumbles upon the island of Laputa which is a floating world filled with scientists. It is here when the astronomers notice that Mars had two moons. Over 150 years later, somewhere in 1877, it was discovered that Mars did indeed have two moons; Phobos and Deimos.
