The death toll of Bacha Khan University stands at 21
On Wednesday, several unidentified gunmen entered Bacha Khan University located in Khyber Pakhtunkha’s Charsadda town. The gunmen opened fire on students and faculty members alike. At the time of the shootout, faculty and students were gathered to recite poetry to commemorate the death anniversary of the leader the university is named after – Bacha Khan. A similar attack was launched by Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Army Public School (APS) in December 2014.

There are conflicting reports as to whether TTP is behind this particular attack or not. Omar Mansoor of the TTP has claimed responsibility of the attack however, Mohammad Khorasani of the same militant faction issued a statement condemning the Bacha Khan University attack and terming it against Shariah. He also issued a warning to all those using TTP’s name. As of right now, the situation within the Bacha Khan University as stabilized.

Soon after the attack began, Pakistan Army raided the building and cleared the mess block by block. The military soon announced the end of the clearance operation however, fear of mass casualties then started to sink in. The attack on APS in Peshawar took 140 precious lives, most of which were students. It was reported that four of the attackers were wearing suicide vests but were killed by Pak army before they had a chance to detonate. Following are few facts regarding Bacha Khan University Attack:
- At least four attackers were involved, all of whom have been killed
- Gunfire is over
- Gunmen scaled the walls and opened fire
- 3,000 students are enrolled at the university at this point
Pakistan army is fighting a massive battle against terrorists to rid the country of such disastrous attacks. However, efforts may need to be intensified. So far, authorities have not been able to pinpoint the terrorist faction behind this attack. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is currently in Switzerland for the World Economic Forum being held at Davos. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif is deeply grieved over the sad incident of terrorists’ attack on Bacha Khan University, Charsada, which has reportedly resulted in the loss of precious human lives and injured many others. Issuing necessary directions to the law enforcement agencies for the earliest elimination of the terrorists, the Prime Minister is personally monitoring the situation and he is continuously informed on the measures taken to combat the terrorist.
