Pakistan’s military spokesman confirmed that a prominent leader of Tehreek e Taliban (TTP) faction Jamaat ur Ahrar (JuA) Ehsanullah Ehsan turned himself in to the authorities.
The announcement was made on Monday by Asif Ghafoor, Pakistan’s military spokesman, in a press briefing in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He did not offer further details on the matter including the time and place of this incident,
The people, the state and the institutions of Pakistan have made considerable progress in the betterment of the country’s security situation… we have progressed to the point that the people who’ve been planning attacks on Pakistan’s soil from across the border have started to see that the situation has changed… In this regard, I would like to share with you that the banned Jamaat ur Ahrar and Tehreek e Taliban spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan has surrendered himself to security forces.
Ehsanullah Ehsan has been missing from prominent action since late 2016. JuA did not make a comment on the announcement however, if the claim is substantiated it will be the most high-profile surrender since Pakistan began crackdown on terrorists within the country. Ghafoor said,
If a person who is doing the wrong thing feels that they are on the wrong side and that they should come back towards good, then I don’t think there can be a bigger success of the state than this.
JuA carried out few of the most heinous suicide attacks across Pakistan including the 2016 Easter Sunday bombing in Lahore that killed over 70 people. JuA was formed in August 2014 when it broke away from TTP under then-commander of its Mohmand district chief Omar Khalid Khorasani and Ehsanullah Ehsan. JuA later joined TTP in the following March but essentially operates independently.
According to the army, some 558 suspected terrorists have surrendered since a countrywide counter-terrorism operation was launched in February this year by the name Radd ul Fasaad (Elimination of Discord). You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates.
