Pakistan successfully beat India 1-0 in the 12th South Asian Games hockey tournament held in Guwahati on Friday which led to a gold win for the national hockey team. Awais-ur-Rehman scored the winning goal for Pakistan hockey team at the end of the first half. With this win, the national hockey team completed the hat-trick of South Asian Games hockey titles. The final between Pakistan and India was played at Moullanna Tayebulah Stadium which was nearly full. Both teams played defensively until the end of the first half when Pakistan scored the first goal, breaking India’s defense.
The game marked the fourth time the arch-rivals clashed in a hockey final. India and Pakistan are historic rivals in absolutely everything, thus it added to the joy of the green shirts. Of the four times the two teams were opposite each other in a hockey final, India took the gold in 1995 in Madras, while Pakistan beat India in 2004 and 2010 in Colombo and Dhaka respectively. 2016 marks the fourth victory by Pakistan against India in a hockey final.
