Iron Fist 2016 will feature a total of 103 fighter jets participating in day and night exercises. Pakistani and Chinese military attaches are not invited.
Military exercises are a common phenomenon throughout the world where several countries take part in joint exercises as means to enhance relationship and display combat capabilities. Indian Air Force (IAF) is due to hold their own military exercise called the Iron Fist. Iron Fist is a day and night exercise by the IAF, the first of which took place on the 22nd February 2013. In the year 2016, IAF will undertake a Fire Power Demonstration (FPD) during day and night at Pokhran in Rajashthan’s Thar Desert on the 18th of March. Military attaches will be invited from around the world to witness the event however, attaches from China and Pakistan have not been invited based on a decision from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and Ministry of Defense (MoD). The Vice Chief of IAF Air Marshal B.S. Dhanoa said,
We have invited defense attaches but not those of Pakistan and China… [It was a] collective decision of MEA and MoD [to leave out the defense attaches of the two countries from the mega exercise].
Several aircrafts from the IAF will participate in this exercise. Not only will the exercise display firepower, and combat capabilities, but Iron Fist 2016 will bring light nature of the Indian Air Force by showcasing aerobatic displays by jets such as the Su-30 MKI. Demonstration by Indian Air Force Guard Commandoes will also take place.
The Iron Fist 2016 will be witnessed by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, and the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.
