At a meeting between Pakistan’s and China’s security officials on Friday, it was decided that Gwadar will be made into a weapon-free city and security for Chinese investors, experts, consultants and engineers will be beefed up while work is carried out on several projects in the port city of Gwadar. This meeting was attended by security and top officials of both countries, including authorities overseeing activities at Gwadar and included Major General Azhar Naveed, Brigadier Shahzad Iftikhar Bhatti, Brigadier Saqib, Provincial Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani, Director General of Gwadar Development Authority Dr. Sajjad Hussain, Deputy Director General of China’s Ministry of Public Security Q.U. Jainging and senior officials from China’s foreign ministry, Ms. Lili and, Zhang Maoming.
The security detail of Gwadar and areas adjacent to it have been handed over to the Pakistan Army. The army has effectively established check posts at all entry points leading into Gwadar town. Senior Officials from Pakistan briefed the Chinese Officials as to the security detail of the port city and the surrounding areas. During the briefing it was conveyed that Gwadar will be turned into a weapon-free city and arrangements will be made for keeping peace in the entire area. The briefing also shed light on the security provision of Chinese nationals.
Furthermore, it was decided that locals will be provided with the maximum facilities and improving the standard of living in Gwadar will be a priority throughout the development and after. Those who are residing in Gwadar will be provided with a residence card while outsiders will have to register at the entry points. Adequate records will be maintained for all the outsiders visiting Gwadar. Outsiders in this instance refers to any person who is not an actual resident of Gwadar.
The need for de-weaponizing cities should not only be limited to Gwadar. Such laws should be extended to major cities of Pakistan. Weapons should only be allowed to qualified guards and security personnel. Civilians should not be allowed weapons especially in public. It is one of the most effective way of maintaining peace and avoiding gun violence. The government should stop issuing weapons license to any who does not qualify as a security official or someone to the effect. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates.
