Experts believe the ongoing tensions between the United States and China could spark a military and economic conflict.
Experts believe that the US and China may be on a collision course given the strained relations between the two. Popular opinion suggests that the relationship may deteriorate under Trump administration. Trump has already refused to back down over the South China Sea dispute. Per a report by experts who have studied Beijing for nearly 50 years, if an acceptable solution on the issues of South China Sea, One-China Policy and trade are not reached, a military collision between the two countries could become a reality. A veteran scholar on China, Orville Schell said,
We have a weird situation – and actually an incredibly dangerous one – because Trump is so unpredictable.. This is America’s Cultural Revolution. Just as Mao overthrew the party establishment and unleashed his red guards, Trump is going after the foreign policy establishment elite and he is unleashing his populism.
Trump went overboard when he accused China of militarizing the South China Sea, refusing to rein in North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and manipulating the currency, and that too over Twitter.
Experts believe that a collision is possible over the South China Sea dispute. China already has sophisticated weapons placed on several artificial islands in the sea, something Washington does not agree with. If the United States decides to deploy military in the South China Sea, a confrontation may be imminent. Members of Trump’s team have strongly criticized Obama’s posture in the Asia-Pacific and have called for an increased military presence in the region. According to another expert,
If China believes that the United States is simply bent on containing it militarily, then Beijing would lose any motivation to moderate its conduct and might instead double down on preparations to fight and win in a showdown.
China and the US should work towards a peaceful resolution of all pending issues so to avoid a military spark between two heavily nuclear-armed nations. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates. Otherwise fill in the subscription box above, or subscribe to our RSS Feed.
