Dr Asim Hussain, including five others, was charged with corruption of a massive sum amounting to PKR 462 billion on Friday. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges presented against him. Dr Asim Hussain faced these charges along with the former petroleum secretary Muhammad Ejaz Chaudhry, administrator of Ziauddin Medical Centre in Dubai Abdul Hameed, former chief executive officer of the Karachi Dock Labor Board (KDLB) Safdar Hussain, and former directors of the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) Syed Athar Hussain and Masood Haider Jaffri. These five people were charged with facilitating Dr Asim Hussain.
Judge Saad Qureshi read out these charges against them. Dr Asim has been accused of misusing his authority for getting plots allotted illegally and encroaching upon state land to expand Ziauddin Hospital. He was previously charged with aiding and abetting terrorists. According to the new charges, Dr Asim Hussain deprived the state of a whopping PKR 462.5 billion from the period between 2010 and 2013. Of this sum, PKR 450 billion was gathered through fertilizer scam, PKR 9.5 billion through land fraud, and PKR 3 billion money laundering.
Dr Asim approved summaries for unjustified curtailment of gas which was given the name of load management. Ejaz Chauhdry was facilitated the movement of these summaries. Dr Asim also failed to implement a decision taken in June 2011 by the Economic Coordination Committee which allowed for the provision of 80% gas supply to fertilizer companies. Safdar Hussain was involved in illegal extension and awarding of KDLB contract which as in clear violation of Public Procurement Regulatory Authority rules. He also facilitated Dr Asim to take over the KDLB hospital. Furthermore, the corruption reference dictated that Dr Asim Hussain developed Ziauddin Hospital Trust in 1981 for charitable causes however, these causes were never adhered to and had since been used for commercial purposes violating the Trust Act of 1982. The former petroleum minister has been accused of using this charity hospital for money laundering, and other such criminal acts. He faces another corruption reference amounting to PKR 17.3 billion, and a criminal charge of allegedly treating and harboring terrorist elements.
