Corruption case against Dr. Asim Hussain has been making quite rounds since the past few weeks. Dr. Asim is the former petroleum minister and a close hand to PPP co-chairman and former President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari. Dr. Asim Hussain was arrested last month on the 26th August, 2015 owing to several allegations regarding corruption against him. Since the arrest, PPP has been aggressive against the current government and rangers. Recently, Sindh Rangers were able to release a detailed document which proves that the corruption case against Dr. Asim Hussain was based on solid grounds.
The document, according to media reports, is carries 12 pages, and it lists names of people from whom PPP leader took huge amounts of money in the form of bribes or shares etc. The report has now been sent off to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for further action and investigation. It was learned that NAB has already formed an investigation team for further pursuing the corruption case against Dr. Asim Hussain. The team also includes Sindh Rangers. The Chairman of NAB, Chaudhry Qamar Zaman, has already been briefed by the Chief of Sindh Rangers and Corps Commander Karachi.
Along with the detailed report on the corruption case against Dr. Asim Hussain, Sindh Rangers were kind enough to send a covering letter to NAB. The letter described Dr. Asim Hussain as ‘prima donna at the national level’ who was able to gain colossal illegal benefits that significantly enhanced his financial stature and social standing, rendering him indispensable. Five officials from the Sui Gas and Petroleum Ministry, arrested along with Dr. Asim, confessed to billions and billions of rupees that Dr. Asim collected as kickbacks from several companies. Those interrogated include,
- Former Managing Director, SSGC Zuhair Siddiqui,
- Deputy Managing Director, SSGC Shoaib Warsi,
- Chief Financial Officer, SSGC Amin Rajput,
- Sr. General Manager, SSGC Fayyaz Merchant and
- General Manager SSGS Kamran Ehsan Nagi.
The report stated,
Dr. Asim has been found involved in various acts of corruption, corrupt practices and misuse of authority as public office holder. He is responsible for inflicting losses to the tune of billions of rupees on the national exchequer. Huge amounts so embezzled were provided to his political masters, which were subsequently used in terror financing and funding target killers.
The enormous figures that were quoted in the report corruption case against Dr. Asim Hussain amount to hundreds of billions rupees that the accused gathered over period of 4 to 5 years. As far as financial activity is concerned, it is yet unknown exactly how he was able to conceal such huge amounts from the authorities, and how the money was transferred overseas, if so. The bank accounts related with Dr. Asim Hussain however, have been sealed.
Corruption of such enormity is the reason why Pakistan suffers to-date. Until and unless corruption can be annihilated completely from within the system, Pakistan will maintain its position at a standstill. One thing of certainty is that accountability institutes in Pakistan should be provided with more jurisdiction and power. Privatization is perhaps one way to go.
