While the rest of the world may not entirely depend or trust Chinese weapons, China is still the fastest growing arms exporter in the world. The country is improving its production capabilities by the passing minute and is become more efficient with making and selling advanced weapon systems. Years between 2011 and 2015 were the biggest for China as an arms exporter since the sales rose by 88% compared to the previous five-year span. According to a report by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China is now ahead of France, Germany and the UK when it comes to exporting arms.
According to various reports, primary markets for China’s weapons systems are Pakistan with a total of 35% of purchases, followed by Bangladesh with 20% purchase and Myanmar coming in at third with 16% of the total purchases. For the years between 2011 and 2015, following are the biggest export markets for China.
India is raking up on advanced weapon systems and as such, China is the only ally (Russia following closely) it can look to in order maintain balance in the subcontinent. China has not only helped build Pakistan a military arsenal rather quickly, but Beijing exported a plethora of small nuclear weapons to Islamabad. Bangladesh comes in at second and has been Beijing’s client for many years primarily because of China’s weapons carrying a cheaper price tag. Myanmar was heavily burdened by Western sanctions for quite some time and therefore relied on China immensely for help building its military.
Japan, in April 2014, under Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, overturned a ban on exporting arms. This ban was placed after World War II. If things pick up for Japan, the country has the capability of stealing China’s third place however, that may still take several years. China’s activities in the South China Sea may however, help the process. Largely, China’s arms exports is a concern for India since analysts believe that it is primarily because of India that the neighboring nations are buying arsenals of weaponry. Many believe that China is actively seeking nations surrounding India and supplying them with arms in order to destabilize and possibly intimidate India. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates.
