The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) refused to allow 30 deported migrants from Greece to disembark from a chartered plane that arrived in Islamabad earlier today. The incident comes after weeks of talks with the European Union to settle a migration disputes. Pakistan at first, agreed to let in deported migrants from the EU however, later the decision was reversed. Soon thereafter, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the Interior Minister of Pakistan, announced that Pakistan will only accept deportees if they will be proven as Pakistanis and valid reason for their deportation is provided, which would seem the logical approach.
An estimated 50,000 travel to Europe via legal means in order to work. Reportedly, last year in 2014, some 21,000 Pakistani migrants were living in Europe illegally or otherwise without permission. They were ordered to return to Pakistan based on the statistics from the European Union. Less is known as to the fate of those 21,000 however, the 30 that arrived in Islamabad today from Greece, were unverified deportees according to the Interior Ministry of Pakistan. A statement from the Ministry read,
On the interior minister’s orders, the FIA has not allowed these illegally deported people and the aircraft crew to leave the plane.
While the European mission in Pakistan has not yet commented upon the situation, Nisar Ali Khan said, “Despite having settled all issues with the European Commissioner, Pakistani laws have been violated, which absolutely cannot be allowed.” The Ministry ordered the FIA to not allow any passenger to disembark the plane until a thorough verification of documents and citizenship has been carried out. The Ministry further said that Greece did not provide documents proving that the passengers were Pakistani to begin with and hence, accepting them was not an option. Sources also revealed that the Civil Aviation Authority was questioned as to why the plane was allowed to land in the first place. It seems very out of place that upon reaching an agreement with the European Union over acceptance of migrants, the EU failed to follow the procedure. You can follow us on Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ for more updates.
